Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the revised Covid-19 vaccine policy, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday called it a “dirty drive against the state government”.
PM Modi, in a televised address on Monday, announced a revised policy for Covid-19 vaccination drive. PM Modi said the central government would now procure 75 per cent of all Covid-19 vaccines and allocate them to the states free of cost.
The states were permitted to procure 25 per cent of the vaccines under the previous policy announced in April and implemented from May 1. The rest 25 per cent of Covid-19 would be procured by private hospitals for those who want to get inoculated there.
Mamata Banerjee took a dig at PM Modi for taking back the control of Covid-19 vaccine procurement process. “Why is PM Modi eager to take credit? It was before Bihar polls, that the government promised free vaccine… what happened after that,” asked Mamata Banerjee while addressing a press conference after a meeting with leaders of farmers’ unions protesting the Centre’s farm laws.
Mamata Banerjee also said that by imposing GST on Covid-19 vaccines, the Centre was playing a game of life and death.
A day after PM Modi announced capping the service charge of vaccines administered by private hospitals at Rs 150, the Centre on Tuesday fixed the maximum price for Covid-19 vaccines to be given by private players.
The price of Covishield has been fixed at Rs 780, Covaxin at Rs 1,410, and Sputnik V at Rs 1,145.
“We have vaccinated 20 million people so far. We haven’t received anything from the prime minister except speeches. We would just like to say that we want PM Modi to be removed,” Mamata Banerjee said.
Mamata Banerjee alleged that a lot of people died during Covid-19 pandemic due to the Centre’s wrong vaccine policy.
“From Covid to farm laws, the whole country is bearing the brunt. We are not even aware of the exact Covid policy. Day by day, only dead bodies are being found in UP,” Mamata Banerjee said.
