Czech tennis player Barbora Krejcikova overcame a spirited performance from Maria Sakkari to reach her maiden Grand Slam final after winning the second semifinal of the French Open 2021 on Thursday.

The world No. 33 Krejcikova saved a match point en route her 7-5, 4-6, 9-7 victory over the 17th-seeded Greek in a marathon match which lasted 3 hours and 18 minutes in Paris.

Down 5-3, 30-40 on her serve in the decider against 17th-seeded Maria Sakkari, Krejcikova hit a backhand winner at the net to stay alive in the match. She finally held and broke back in the next game to level at 5-5.

Krejcikova needed five match points to seal the win victory at the Court Philippe-Chatrier.

“I always wanted to play a match like this,” an exhausted Krejcikova said after the match.

The clay-court major will see a maiden winner in the women’s singles as Krejcikova set up the final against Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek 7-5, 6-3 in the first semifinal.

Pavlyuchenkova, seeded 31st, is playing in her 52nd major tournament and her 14th French Open. She had been 0-6 in major quarterfinals before finally surmounting that hurdle on Tuesday, and she was steadier than the big-swinging Zidansek in their semifinal.
