Girls should not be given phones as it leads to rapes: UP Women’s Commission member

A member of the Uttar Pradesh Women’s Commission said that girls should not be given mobile phones as it leads to rapes. Meena Kumari made the remarks during a public hearing of complaints related to women in Aligarh district.

“Girls should not be given mobile phones. Girls talk with boys on phones for hours and later run away with them. Their phones are not even checked and family members are unaware of these things,” Meena Kumari said.

The UP Women’s Commission member said the society itself would have to be serious about the increasing crimes against women.

Meena Kumari also said that parents, especially mothers, have a big responsibility and should monitor their daughters.

“Mothers have a big responsibility. Today, if their daughters are careless, then mothers are responsible for that,” she further said.

Anju Chaudhary, the vice-chairperson of the commission, distanced herself from the remarks and said that taking away mobile phones was not a solution to end sexual violence, TOI reported.

In January, National Commission for Women member Chandramukhi Devi stoked a controversy with her comments on a gangrape case in Badaun. She had said the incident could have been avoided if the woman had not ventured out in the evening. Facing outrage, Chandramukhi Devi later withdrew her statement.
