Modi is more pro-farmers than what UPA was, says BJP national gen sec Tarun Chugh

Bharatiya Janata Party’s national general secretary Tarun Chugh on Thursday hailed the central government’s decision to increase the minimum support price (MSP) of Kharif crops for marketing season 2021-22.

Chugh stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies were more ‘pro-farmer’ than those implemented by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government between 2004 and 2014.

In a statement, Chugh said that the MSP of Kharif crops has been highest in recent times. “This should dispel any doubts in the minds of farmers that the MSP system will be tampered with at all by the Modi government. In fact, the Centre is encouraging farmers with hiked MSP to make more efforts and double their income by 2022,” he stated.

Tarun Chugh noted that the highest absolute increase was for sesamum, whose MSP rose by 6.6 per cent to Rs 7,307 per quintal. On the other hand, groundnut saw an increase of Rs 275 per quintal.

When the UPA government was in power, he said, farmers of these crops never received such encouragement.

Additionally, he claimed that MSP payment to farmers for paddy had increased by 2.4 times in the last five years. While the MSP for paddy increased from Rs 1,000 per quintal to Rs 1,310 per quintal when the UPA was in power, it had shot up from Rs 1,360 to Rs 1,940 per quintal under BJP rule, he said.

According to BJP’s Tarun Chugh, this establishes that the current government is pro-farmers and is making efforts to ensure agriculture is sustainable.

In the long run, the Modi government will endeavour to double the income of farmers, he added.

Meanwhile, the farmers protesting against the Centre’s three controversial farm laws observed May 26 as a ‘black day’ to mark six months since their protest began. They are demanding that the three laws be rolled back and a new law to guarantee MSP be put in place.
