Mumbai rains: BMC directs officials to inspect all manholes

After a viral video sparked widespread outrage in Mumbai, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has ordered manual inspections of all manholes under its jurisdiction.

Two women in the Bhandup suburbs had a narrow escape after falling into a manhole on June 9 as heavy rains lashed the city. They escaped with minor injuries, but the video of the incident quickly went viral, triggering widespread outrage and harsh criticism from the opposition.

Member of Parliament from Mumbai northeast, Manoj Kotak, shared the video on social media and commented on the incident.

“The richest civic body of India BMC is incapable of keeping unclogged manholes, clean sewerage. The Mumbaikars are devoid of basic rights of cleanliness and now the incompetence is proving fatal. The video of two females falling in open manholes at Bhandup rages me to the core,” wrote the MP on Twitter.

Following the incident, the BMC has now stated that it has issued strict instructions to inspect manholes on all roads within the Mumbai Municipal Corporation area immediately and manually.

“The cover of a manhole on the east side of Village Road in Bhandup (West) was leaked during heavy rains yesterday and a video of two women falling into it has been circulating on social media as well as on news channels. In this regard, it is clarified that the manhole has been removed immediately and a new manhole has been installed there,” said a BMC official.

Manholes are also inspected and repaired as part of pre-monsoon preparations, as per a statement issued by the BMC.

“However, after yesterday’s heavy rains and drainage, the corporation is once again inspecting all the roads and inspecting the manholes. Necessary replacement of manholes is being done,” the BMC official added.
