A 27-year-old woman died in Thane on Wednesday night after she fell off a moving auto rickshaw. Two men on a bike had snatched her mobile phone and she fell while trying to retrieve the same.

She fell head first and was bleeding profusely from the injuries on her head. The woman was rushed to a hospital in Kalwa. However, she was declared dead on arrival.

The Naupada police in Thane have arrested two accused in the case from Bhiwandi town. They have been identified as 20-year-old Alkesh Momin Ansari and 18-year-old Sohail Ramzan Ansari. The two men have been charged under sections 392, 304 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code.

Police officials have identified the woman as Kanmila Raisingh. The 27-year-old was a resident of Kalina in Mumbai. She worked at Thane’s Viviana Mall at a spa centre.

On Wednesday, she left her workplace at 7.50 pm to head home. She boarded an auto rickshaw with her friend and sat on the left side, according to police officials. The two accused came close to the auto on their bike and snatched her mobile phone. Taken aback, she tried to retrieve the phone by leaning out but lost her balance and fell from the rapidly moving vehicle.

The accused escaped from the spot. The woman’s co-traveller registered a police complaint and the police then made separate teams to track down the two men. Based on CCTV footage, phone location and local intelligence, they managed to nab the accused on Thursday.
