Pandey has filled the vacancy created by the retirement of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sunil Arora. He has joined CEC Sushil Chandra and Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar in the top executive body of the Election Commission of India (ECI).
While Sushil Chandra, who worked in the revenue department for 38 years, has previously served in Uttar Pradesh, Rajiv Kumar is from the state. Kumar is a 1984 batch Indian Administrative Services officer and held the position of finance secretary previously.
Anup Chandra Pandey, 62 years of age, is a retired 1984 batch Indian Administrative Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre. He has held positions at both the state and central levels over his nearly 35-year-long career.
Pandey served as Uttar Pradesh’s chief secretary under chief minister Yogi Adityanath from July 2018 to August 2019. He was earlier the state’s industrial development commissioner.
Congress leader Raj Babbar’s tweet about all three of them being from Uttar Pradesh ends with “#UPElection2022”.
Pandey’s appointment has restored the Election Commission of India to its full strength ahead of elections in Goa, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh next year.
